Method
Oscillation as Method
Observation is the invitation. Oscillation is the method. Drawing is permission to draw the truth.
Definition
Oscillation is a praxis-based method of disciplined and iterative movement between site and drawing, perception and interpretation, memory and imagination, measurement and embodiment, and presence and absence. These conditions remain distinct while continually informing one another.
Sequence
Walk. Acknowledge. Wait. Observe. Draw. Return.
How Knowledge Develops
Oscillation begins with encounter. Attention is directed toward threshold, scale, light, surface, sound, temperature, circulation, obstruction, and line of sight. Observation changes the drawing. Drawing alters memory. Memory reshapes renewed perception. The interval between visits matters because memory selects, intensifies, omits, combines, and reconstructs.
A site is therefore not understood through a single encounter. Knowledge develops cumulatively through presence, drawing, interval, reconstruction, return, and reflection.
Site-Drawing
Site-drawing is a situated practice through which the artist-researcher engages materially, perceptually, and bodily with a place. Drawing does not merely illustrate a conclusion reached elsewhere. It participates in the production of knowledge by holding observation, memory, imagination, and material process in relation.
An Ethics of Encounter
I do not approach places to extract from them. I approach them to give them my attention.
Access is not equivalent to entitlement. Drawing can attend to a trace, but it cannot complete the history from which that trace emerged. The method therefore privileges reverence over extraction and attention over exploitation.
Truth
Truth, within this practice, does not mean objective certainty. It names fidelity to the encounter and the ethical responsibility to attend carefully to what is observed, remembered, felt, and transformed through drawing.
